Dell EMC KTN-STL3 - continued...

Noise
Bad power supply = full speed blowers
Blower fans... they are VERY loud when running full speed. I'm running redundant EMC 071-000-553. One of these has orange warning lights on so it's a bad power supply and is causing full power mode. I've managed to find another full EMC-KTN3 at auction and used it's power supply to replace my current one. It actually uses 071-000-554 and these may be a newer version? Either way they work fine and it's nice and quiet now.
SAS Interposers
Spare Caddys and Interposers for SATA drives
Interposers are a small board what connects between the sas and sata connectors on the drives. These chips translate the commands from certain drives to the SAS communications. I had 2 flash ones so i needed to replaces these with SATA ones.
I ordered spares and they arrived quickly from eBay. Swapped out the old drives for new ones and everything is working great.
I purchased a couple of caddy / 303-115-003D interposers for use with my Ironwolf 4TB SATA drives. $18 each delivered.

Raid Cards
Replace your PCI Raid card ASAP
While the existing HPE P440 raid card was working for basic HBA functions it did not allow S.M.A.R.T readings without using a hack. I ordered a Dell H200 which comes with dual 8087 ports. Ebay > Dell H200 6Gbps SAS HBA = (LSI 9211-8i) FW P20 IT Mode.
I used an 8087 to 8088 cable to connect directly to the HBA and on first boot worked correctly. It was odd though the card didnt show in the boot sequence (as the old one did) so I didnt think it was recognised at first. After TrueNAS started the pool was loaded as expected and all S.M.A.R.T values were available.
All the drives also appear to be working without errors after SHORT tests.
